Chief Black Buffalo
Oil on canvas board 8 x 10
Portrait of Chief Black Buffalo. Lewis and Clark early on in the voyage west near what is now Pierre, South Dakota, are confronted by the mighty Teton Sioux . Upon demands by the Tetons that one of the boats be used as a toll for moving farther upriver, a fight nearly ensues, but is defused by the diplomacy of Chief Black Buffalo. Without the strong leadership and cool head of the chief the Lewis and Clark Voyage could have ended very early.
